March Newsletter - Spring, Softball, and Sharia

I write this on the first day of spring (March 20th, hence the "March/April" title). Walking Bert today, I see many of our neighbors for the first time since winter started; like sleepy bears coming out of a long hibernation (except these bears are throwing baseballs to each other and sweeping the street while muttering under their breath about how whomever planted the particular type of tree 100 years ago wasn't very thoughtful, given the overabundance of detritus it produces). It's a little shocking that last month had this photo:

Power Lines in Indiana Covered with ice

This is from an article in "thaIndian.com"

But enough about the weather!

Goings on at Crescent Project

As you may recall, Oasis is our three-day conference, held this year in November in Washington D.C.. To get a feeling for it, I'd like to invite you to join me April 2nd (Saturday), from 10:00a - 11:30a at College Park Church. You can click here for more details.

In Chicago at the end of May, is our five-day intensive training, the Sahara Challenge.

Can You See Me?

Our women's advocacy group is hosting a talk on May 13th as part of the "Can you see me?" series to teach about social justice for women in the Muslim world. While I'd love to say, I'll see you there, I don't think I'm allowed to go.

As you may recall, I'm at Crescent Project
two days a week. I'm working hard to learn the ropes; diving into the computer and financial systems while helping to hire an assistant for the president.

The Mitchells

Maddie is volunteering at Habitat for Humanity over spring break, and got a stellar report card this quarter. Molly just started softball (and track and field, for that matter), which meant a trip to Dick's at 9pm to buy cleats (since her feet are embarrassingly differently sized, we attempted to buy a mis-matched pair but the cashier insisted on giving us a second pair of shoes for free...I'm still not sure if she made a mistake or was just being nice. I find it best not to ask too many questions in these situations).

Please let me know if you have any specific prayer needs.

An update on the fan-damily

An update on the fan-damily:

Molly: Is playing basketball like a fiend (she had a game today, but missed the 8am practice on Saturday (I wonder why??)). Her coach is a bit of a hard a**, but the girls aren't complaining about him, and she's getting good exercise.

Maddie: Doesn't seem to be reading as much as before, but is spending a lot of time with friends, and is texting over 5,000 messages a month. She went to a birthday party at Jockamo's pizza today.

Courtney: Is starting a new job (still within the Catholic Center) on Monday. It's in the "recruitment" department for Priests.

Kieron: I'm no longer a ChaCha guide. I'm now a ChaCha expediter (I clean up, then categorize incoming questions). At $0.03 a question, I might make $3.00 an hour. I'M A SWEAT SHOP WORKER!

Thank you for your interest, and it had better be genuine and non-sexual.

You will be contacted in writing if you are approved. Please do not try to call or write.

To prepare yourself in case you are approved, start studying Daddy's Rules for Dating:

Daddy's Rules for Dating

Your dad's rules for your boyfriend (or for you if you're a guy):

Rule One: If you pull into my driveway and honk you'd better be delivering a package, because you're sure not picking anything up.

Rule Two:
You do not touch my daughter in front of me. You may glance at her so long as you do not peer at anything below her neck. If you cannot keep your eyes or hands off of my daughter's body, I will remove them.

Rule Three:
I am aware that it is considered fashionable for boys of your age to wear their trousers so loosely that they appear to be falling off their hips. Please don't take this as an insult, but you and all of your friends are complete idiots. Still, I want to be fair and open minded about this issue, so I propose this compromise: You may come to the door with your underwear showing and your pants ten sizes too big, and I will not object. However, in order to ensure that your clothes do not, in fact, come off during the course of your date with my daughter, I will take my electric nail gun and fasten your trousers securely in place to your waist.

Rule Four:
I'm sure you've been told that in today's world sex without utilizing a 'Barrier method' of some kind can kill you. Let me elaborate, when it comes to sex, I am the barrier, and I will kill you.

Rule Five:
It is usually understood that in order for us to get to know each other, we should talk about sports, politics, and other issues of the day. Please do not do this. The only information I require from you is an indication of when you expect to have my daughter safely back at my house, and the only word I need from you on this subject is: 'early.'

Rule Six:
I have no doubt you are a popular fellow, with many opportunities to date other girls. This is fine with me as long as it is okay with my daughter. Otherwise, once you have gone out with my little girl, you will continue to date no one but her until she is finished with you. If you make her cry, I will make you cry.

Rule Seven:
The following places are not appropriate for a date with my daughter: Places where there are beds, sofas, or anything softer than a wooden stool, places where there is darkness, places where there is dancing, holding hands, or happiness.

Rule Eight:
Do not lie to me. I may appear to be a potbellied, balding, middle-aged, dim-witted has-been. But on issues relating to my daughter, I am the all-knowing, merciless god of your universe. If I ask you where you are going and with whom, you have one chance to tell me the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I have a tomahawk, a shovel, and a quarter acre behind the house. Do not trifle with me.

The Culture is Sliding into the Crapper

When I first had children, I had this idea that I wouldn't take them to McDonald's (since it isn't really the healthiest of foods, and it just reminds me of the more-tattoos-than-teeth crowd letting their children drink coke from a baby bottle). I held out for about a week-and-a-half, and then we were feeding a smilingbabymaddie french fries.

My next bastion of virtue was cell phones. There was NO WAY my pre-teen was going to trundle about with a cell phone. You know that one fell. I now have a ten-year-old with a cell phone. WHY DOES A TEN-YEAR-OLD NEED A CELL PHONE??

I guess I should be asking MYSELF that question, since I was intimately involved with the decision.

These things just seem to slip in...and slip by. They seem like the right decision at the time. But stepping back and looking at it from a high level; something is amiss. I mean, I didn't even fight very hard. I guess it isn't important.

I think that's part of the reason the culture is sliding into the crapper. No one individual decision "is very important". Taken as a whole, however...where does it end?

Molly's Injury and Cell Phone

Molly is limping due to a sprained ankle from kickball, and she just got stung on the bottom of her OTHER foot (while cleaning out her hamster cage). She wants to hop on the "good" foot, but that ankle is sprained.

Picture to be posted later (if we can get her new cell phone to work). Oh, and lest you think it is RIDICULOUS for a 10-year old to have a cell phone, we intend to turn off our land line, and it satisfies my anal-retentive side for each family member to thus have their own separate cell phone (and voice mail). It seems somehow "right".

Welcome to Irvington, Kerry

Last night my family and another went to a local Mexican restaurant. There were ten of us, so they put us outside.

My girls sat down first, and apparently next to a table with a couple guys and a girl who had been there for awhile, drinking, and dropping the f-bomb.

The management asked them to leave, and when they found out it was (at least in part) due to the fact they were cursing in front of the (newly arrived) children, they got pretty angry, and the curse words really started to fly...including m*therf*er.

As they walked out, they turned to Maddie and Molly, and said "F*ck you, B*itches".

Welcome to Irvington, Kerry.
