Maddie's B-day, and Gen Con Day 1 (Thursday)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MADDIE! She went to the state fair as a surprise on Wednesday with a few of her friends. She is 11. I thought she was already 11, so now at least I'm right. The problem is, their ages keep changing, so I can never just memorize them.

=========GEN CON DAY 1==========

Arriving at 7:30 for my first game to start at 10am (or so I thought), I drove around, looking for a parking place for about half-an-hour, going on roads (past the zoo, etc.) that I didn't even know existed, being yelled at by shopkeepers not to park here or there, until finally, I parked A TWENTY MINUTE WALK from the convention center.

Luckily (or not, depending on if you believe in luck), it was on the canal, so it was a nice walk, if not a little depressing, since I only saw joggers.

Here at the games I played:

  • This Game Sucks (a tongue-in-cheek satire of gamers trying to get out of playing a game)
  • Blink (against the three-time world champion...I won one out of three games)
  • Poker (could have won a trip to Vegas, but my KK lost to AK that hit his second A on fourth street - I only played for about 30 minutes, and paid $18 for the privledge)
  • Hector and Achillies (2-player yawnfest)
  • Monsters Menace America (I'd play this again)
  • Blue Moon City (4-player yawnfest)
  • Arkham Horror (see below)
  • Eve Online CCG (quick demo - it is being released at the Con)
I also learned the rules for Oriente by Mayfair games (a neat looking card game), and the Pacific Theater expansion to Memoir '44.

Dang, the cat was wet (this is not a euphemism...I just petted Daisy, and I didn't realize it was raining outside). At least it wasn't raining when I was walking back to my car AT 1:30 IN THE MORNING, after playing Arkham Horror for 4 hours. It was actually pretty engaging the whole time.

Troy called me this morning, and he's decided to take the day off, so I should see him at the Con.

Fun to hear about the Con...heard about it on NPR this morn....Indy loves it and it generates lots of good will, etc.
