Gen Con was an interesting mix of people

Gen Con was an interesting mix of people. My boss asked me if I saw any cross-dressers there, and I kinda did. Some guy had on black lipstick, and was wearing a see-through shirt. Looked very effeminate, but was not TRYING to look female, so he didn't really count.

The interesting mix comes from the fact that there are a bunch of 50 year-old ex-military guys with buzz cuts (or military wannabees) who are playing with their toy soliders (or said another way, doing historical simulations of battles) standing in line with a guy dressed as a dark elf.

Now, to be fair, I *do* think that there were more women there than ever before. I think it's because of the boyfriend factor, and that the gaming companies are getting smarter about making games to attract women. Women are more attracted to cooperative, creative gaming, or games for their children. As gamer men have children, the women are getting more into it.

Gen Con

I went to Gen Con for a couple days last week. It was fun, but for some reason this year I ended up with more down time than usual.

I won a game of Monopoly, which put me in the semi-finals, then I lost to a 14-year-old.

I won a game of Memoir '44 (a WWII miniatures game, but one that plays very quickly - each game takes about 45 minutes), and they told me I was in the semi-finals. But when I got there, they said that I WASN'T. Of course, any time something like that happens, it ends up creating at least 2 hours of downtime (sometimes up to 4). But there is still plently of fun stuff to do in the "downtime", like learn new games.

My favorite game of the convention was called "Dungeon Twister". It's the only game I bought (a used copy of for $20). It's a french game, just released in english a couple days ago. It is the only game ever to hit the top 100 on BGG without having been released in english.

Well, better get to work!

Upper-the-dator

Jackpot is going to a private "rescue" tomorrow or the next day. They have a "no kill" policy, a place for the dogs to run around in, and the longest they've had a pet is 3 months. They make potential adoptees sign a contract. It sounds nice.

The girls start school this week (on Thursday). They've got their uniforms, and all supplies.

I go to Gen Con (a game convention) on Thurs - Sun (just in the afternoons on Thurs and Fri, and the morning on Sun). That reminds me, I need to call my uncle and let him know that I need to take him to church Sun evening instead of Sun morning.

Yesterday was the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, so I went to mass with Courtney and the girls downtown at noon, then took the rest of the day off and spent it at home, playing games with the girls, etc. It was a nice day.

The girls are going to try and go to the state fair some time this week...I don't think I'll be able to make it due to Gen Con, etc.
